Oderbruch

The Oder marsh nowadays is located in a widening between the Neumark plateau, the Barnim and Lebuse plateaus and is intensively used by agriculture. Until about 250 years ago, the Oder marsh was a floodplain that was regularly flooded by the river. Not before 1747 to 1753 the marsh was extensively drained by order of the Prussian king Frederick II. It is hardly known that you find here ‘Dutch’ hydrological conditions, as the mean tide level of the Oder marsh is higher than its northwestern water level, so that there is always water available that has to be used or drained away.
