The improvement measures on the Warthe river carried out under Frederick II did not reach the same dimensions as on the Oder marsh, so that you find here today one of the most important natural flooding regions of Central Europe, the national park ‘Warthe Mouth’. About 250 bird species live in this bird sanctuary, 170 of them breed here. In late autumn the park becomes the empire of the Nordic geese. Big flocks with up to 200,000 birds stay here during the migration period. Some of them even use the region as important wintering grounds.
Here, nature lives in harmony with the modern world, but it also witnessed the regions exciting history. Once the processions of the orders of knights and then the devastating troops of Europe’s most powerful armies crossed the military marked region with the fortress Küstrin. The remains of the past, such as the ruins of the old town of Küstrin,
the concentration camp Sonnenburg, the Templar chapel in Quartschen or the battle field close to Zorndorf can still be visited today.
